Somewhere we call home...

Happy New Year to you all by the way, and thank you for following us and what we are up to. We have been in one place for a month now. A month. Wow, that has gone quickly. We are in Whistler, the snow is falling, we have family around the corner and we are skiing whenever we can. Life is pretty good. Being in one place, particularly somewhere like this that we know and love, has its many advantages, of course, but has certainly taken a bit of adjusting for us. I think we were both surprised at how much we loved travelling with the kids... We did so many stops but it didn't feel rushed. It was fun planning day by day, finding out about new places and discovering new things every day. I think in many ways it is easier than being in one place. Less of a call for stuff, things and other people! Teaching the kids is certainly easier on the move. Home schooling on the road just happens, especially in New Zealand when there is a different geological feature around every corner. Tom might be a bit behind with his reading but he told me all about volcanoes and igneous rocks the other day so something went in...

Now we are in one place we are needing to get into a bit more of a routine. Books out on some days, not on others. We have found some online courses for the kids to do from time to time which are fantastic for anyone who is interested, Outschool is a great resource. Also Khan Academy which is free and helps explain anything and everything with video tutorials is brilliant. We are interspering these with some Maths/English every now and again and regular reading. It is not without its battles, but generally they are being pretty good about it. The week before Christmas they were given a bit of a project to come up with an idea and make a website. I gave them the tools to do it by showing them how it worked on Wix, a website building program, and then I just left them to it unless they asked for help. No help with branding or design at all.
Here are the results, they are a work in progress but they are fantastic and the kids are both so proud of them. I know they would love you to have a little look at them in your own time. Click on the photos below to see.
To think back on the last 'term' of the kids lives and what they have seen and done, who they have met, how they have matured and developed in confidence reassures us that we have done the right thing. It has been a massive learning curve for us all that we have loved. The next challenge is home schooling while in one place!
